CAIN: The First Murderer is the story of the man who makes grace hardest to explain — and hardest to refuse. The sentence stands. The mark stands with it. Both belong to the same God.
This study traces Cain through every movement of Genesis 4: his birth and the messianic hope his mother placed in him, the offering that God did not regard and the faith that explains why, the anger that God warned him about before the murder, the first human lie, the divine sentence, the lament, and the mark. It reads that story with the care it deserves — attending to the Hebrew text, engaging the New Testament witnesses (Hebrews 11:4; 12:24; 1 John 3:12; Jude 11), and tracing the theological implications for the doctrine of grace in its most demanding form.
The grace that reaches Cain is not a comfortable grace. It does not remove the consequences of sin. It does not restore what was lost. It marks a murderer for protection and sends him into exile alive.
That is the grace this book is about.
CAIN includes full scholarly apparatus: endnotes, select bibliography, Hebrew and Greek lexicon of key terms, a canonical survey of Cain and Abel across the New Testament, study questions for individual and group use, and a scripture index.
Volume Two of THE FIRST ONES — the series on the men and women of Scripture who were first. The capstone is THE FIRST THINGS OF JESUS: How the Lord of Glory Began.
