Sinopsis

Facsimile of the 1911 Sanborn fire-insurance atlas of the Palisades of lower Bergen County, New Jersey, reproduced in full color from the Library of Congress copy. It covers seven boroughs on and below the Hudson River cliffs: Edgewater with its river-front refineries and chemical works, Fairview, Cliffside Park and Grantwood, Ridgefield and Morsemere, Fort Lee with Coytesville and the Palisades Amusement Park, Leonia and Palisades Park.

The seventy-one numbered sheets work block by block along River Road, Undercliff Avenue, Palisades Avenue, Anderson Avenue, Bergen Boulevard, Main Street, Lemoine Avenue, Grand Avenue and Broad Avenue - the Edgewater Municipal Building, the Borough Halls of Cliffside Park, Ridgefield, Leonia and Palisades Park, the Fairview Town Hall, the post offices, the First National Bank buildings at Edgewater and Fort Lee, the Edgewater Casino and Yacht Club, the Hotel Buena Vista, Hudson Villa, Grand View, Cliffside, Park, Belvedere, Fort Lee, Ferrando's Park and Cella's Park hotels, the Hutton and Fort Lee club houses and Strunck's Road House - through the New York, Susquehanna and Western Railroad round house, docks, coal and freight yards, the Northern Railroad of New Jersey stations, the Public Service Railway power house, car barn, shops and ferry house and the Fort Lee Ferry, the Warner Sugar Refining Company, the Corn Products Refining Company, the General Chemical Company, the Barrett Manufacturing Company, the Bulls Ferry Chemical Company, Pyle's Pearline Works, Spencer Kellogg and Sons' linseed oil mill, the Valvoline Oil Company, the New York Edison Company storehouse, Batterson and Eisele's marble works, Davis and Arundell's iron foundry, the Hudson Dye Works, the Edgewater Cut Glass Works and Hygeia Ice Company, the Bellman Brook Bleachery, the Cliffside Cork Company, the Lowe Paper Company, the Buffalo Moving Picture Company and W. Cook and Sons' book bindery at Coytesville, and the Palisades Amusement Park on the cliff top, to the Collegiate Institute of the Holy Angels, the public and parochial schools of every borough, the Church of the Holy Rosary, the Presbyterian Church and Hall of the Mediator, the Chapel of the Nativity, Trinity, St. James' and St. Stephen's Episcopal, St. John the Baptist and St. Mathew's Catholic, the Roman Catholic Church of the Madonna, Holy Trinity, the Grantwood Congregational, Dutch Reformed, Christian Reformed, Bethany Methodist and Lutheran churches, and the residential streets of Edgewater, Fairview, Cliffside Park, Grantwood, Ridgefield, Morsemere, Fort Lee, Coytesville, Leonia and Palisades Park.

In 1911 the Sanborn Map Company of New York surveyed the seven boroughs of the Palisades for the fire-insurance trade, drawing the built-up streets and river-front works at fifty feet to the inch and the railroad yard and the more open districts of Cliffside Park, Ridgefield, Fort Lee, Leonia and Palisades Park at one hundred feet to the inch. Every building is shown to scale and color-coded for construction (yellow for frame, pink for brick, blue for stone), with heights, uses, windows, party walls, hydrants, water mains and fire stations all marked. The index lists every street and every named business, church, school, hotel, mill and works with the sheet it appears on, and the key map places the colored sheet grid over the whole city.

This Exile Books edition is an unabridged facsimile republication of the atlas: the title sheet, the index, the two key maps with the water report and index of towns, and all seventy-one numbered map sheets as issued (1 to 18, 21 to 47 and 51 to 76), sheets 1, 21 and 51 being the title and key sheets of Edgewater, of Fairview, Cliffside Park and Ridgefield, and of Fort Lee, Leonia and Palisades Park, printed at 8.5 x 11 inches on premium color paper. Ideal for local historians, genealogists, architects, preservationists and anyone tracing a Palisades address back to 1911.

Acerca del autor

The Sanborn Map Company of New York, founded by D. A. Sanborn in 1867 and by the 1900s headquartered at 11 Broadway, surveyed thousands of American cities for the fire-insurance trade. Its large-scale plans record every building's footprint, construction, height and use, and remain the most detailed record of the early twentieth-century American city.
