The book Bread is a comprehensive examination of the importance and pervasiveness of bread consumption in our daily lives. It delves into the role bread plays as physical and spiritual food for us. It demonstrates that bread, as physical food, is a staple for cultures worldwide. As physical food, people enjoy sweet and savory breads in every culture. As spiritual food, the Bible proclaims that we need it because bread sustains the very heart of mortal man(Psalm 104:15). This book also shows the significance of bread in our daily lives by how we use it in metaphoric and colloquial language. For example, we use bread to refer to our money or income.
We also see bread's basic use in that it is a part of the religious customs of many religious ceremonies. Jews celebrate the Passover by eating unleavened bread (Exodus 12). Christians celebrate Holy Communion or the Eucharist by partaking of bread and wine, which they believe represent the body and blood of Christ. The book compares Jesus, the bread of life, to manna or bread from heaven. This book highlights that Jesus admitted that he was the true bread of life come down from heaven. Jesus said he was superior to the manna or bread the Jews ate in the wilderness. They ate the manna and died.
However, Jesus said he is the living bread that anyone may eat of and not die. The book also shows how Jesus, the Bread of Life, was born in Bethlehem, which in Hebrew means "house of bread."
