Eighteenth-century minister William McEwen practiced the personal discipline of distilling his sermons into concise, accessible meditations. In this book, Gordon J. Keddie organizes McEwen’s essays to create a devotional tour of Christian doctrine. In ninety-eight brief entries, McEwen writes about systematic categories ranging from God’s perfections to death and eternity. This treasure trove of preached theology helps us see that knowing God will increase our delight in Him and all His ways.

WILLIAM MCEWEN (1735–1762) served as minister of the gospel at the Associate Congregation in Dundee, Scotland. He studied divinity under Ebenezer Erskine and James Fisher, leaders in the Scottish secession from the national church.
William McEwen practiced the personal discipline of habitually distilling his sermons into clear and earnest meditations. In this book, Gordon J. Keddie organizes McEwen’s essays in a systematic way, resulting in a devotional tour of Christian doctrine. In ninety-eight brief entries, McEwen writes about God’s perfections, sinful mankind, the glories of Christ, salvation for sinners, religious ordinances and means of grace, Christian character, Christian virtues, and death and eternity. As you read, it seems like you can hear him preach. His language is exalted—even flowery—but clear, weighty, meditative, sound, and searching to both mind and conscience. And throughout these meditations, McEwen helps us see that theology is meant to increase our delight in God and all His ways.
