Once upon a time there were two brown birds named Peanut and Walnut. The forest was filled with all kinds of birds-brown birds, blue jays, crows, woodpeckers, and cardinals. People always stopped to look at the cardinals. Peanut wondered why no one stopped to admire him. He was so tired of being small and ordinary! He wanted to fit in and be popular. So one day he decided to paint himself red like the cardinals. And it worked! The cardinals all became his friends invited him to a fun party they were having. But on the way, it began to rain and wash away the color...Like Peanut, many children feel they don’t fit in. Whether because of size, shape, color, or religion, the story is the same. But to a real friend, it doesn’t matter what you are on the outside, it’s who you are on the inside that really counts. And sometimes all we need is a true friend like Walnut to show us the way. A wonderful illustrated children’s book about positivity, inclusivity, and accepting your differences. Perfect for parents, teachers, and caregivers to open a discussion with kids ages 3-8 about body image and diversity.

This is Gayle and Ryan's first story. Cardinal Rule is based on a real life experience. It was written 18 years ago when Ryan was in elementary school and struggling with weight issues. He wanted very much to join the football team, but due to his age and weight restrictions, he was denied the chance. He immediately self-reflected and suffered with many self-image issues such as, not feeling good enough, not fitting into a mold and not being part of a team. As a Mom, I felt helpless. It was a real life struggle that we tackled together and a very serious lesson learned. This story shows how we used our inner strength to get through one of life's trials and survived! We hope you enjoy reading it as much as we did writing it and we especially hope it helps you, like Peanut and Walnut helped us!
