He’s a First Nations elder, and he’s leaving soon for the Yukon where he was born and raised. “You may come with me,” he tells Johanna.
In the Yukon, perils and challenges lie ahead for Johanna. Harsh winters, isolation, and physical dangers are just the beginning. Sandy’s son-in-law, a Mountie, finds Johanna’s terrified manner suspicious and vows to discover her secrets. Sandy’s grandson dislikes her the minute he meets her. ‘You’re not my mother. She died, and Dad killed her.’
Worst of all, the demons in Johanna’s head never let her know peace.
“You must face your fears,” Sandy says. “It is the First Nations way.”
