“A Hand To Hold In The Dark” is no ordinary book. This book is a helpful tool for your little ones. To begin their journey into understanding emotions and coping skills. Filled with relatable scenarios with tips on different ways your child can understand and process them. Learning coping skills is a wonderful stepping stone for any child at any age. Some examples of the skills in the book include… counting, repeating, grounding, writing, drawing, and just simply allowing your emotions to happen while being aware, in control with zero shame. Sometimes kids keep quiet and will struggle to process these negative emotions on their own. I believe this book is a small start to a wonderful journey. Most of the time kids shy away from talking about certain things because they do not think it is normal or maybe even “ weird”. I mention in here a few things that may be a difficult subject to bring up. Like when you cant sleep because you were thinking about something embarrassing, or a mistake you may have made, I remind them it is okay and to look back and laugh. Tomorrow will be better!!! At the end of the book there are a few pages for them to interact with….. to write when they are sad or mad. To write about a happy memory. Doodle when bored. Draw themselves. List their favorite things and my 123 breathe with me page where they can Breath in 1.2.3.4 Breathe out 1.2.3.4. A few questions that can help them identify their triggers and coping skills! And a safe place for them to write or draw in the very back! Creating this book was quite the learning experience and allowed me to bond with my daughter. Who had to help me navigate how to put pictures in, help me draw them as she is way more of an artist than me and listen to me read it over and over to make sure it sounded just right! I hope this book is a light for your child when things get a little dark.
