Rabbit thinks that there are too many rules. Everyone wants her to behave a certain way and she does not like it. She wants to be free to do whatever she wants. Over a cup of tea with her human dad, Rabbit the Dog makes demands that might have consequences that she has not considered. Maybe, just maybe, rules are not all bad.
In this naptime/early reader story, Rabbit the Dog learns about several types of rules and consequences that make each rule important. The rules she and her human dad talk about can be put into six buckets: physical safety, manners, healthy habits, keeping the peace, laws, and emotional safety. In the end, Rabbit first realizes that rules are important if they protect her, but then she considers that it might be good to protect everyone.
We have identified legitimate research papers and gleaned the lessons learned from each one. Thus, this story promotes phonetic awareness, builds vocabulary, and is useful as a transition from picture book to early reader. It also facilitated educational discussions as noted above. And, finally, it is written and illustrated in such a way that it should not be annoying and tiresome to read several times. (As an added bonus it is also a short story so that you can get the child down for a nap quickly.)
