Log your daily meals and sodium intake.
Keeping a food logbook helps you be accountable for your eating habits, especially if you need to track your intake of specific foods or nutritional data. If your healthcare provider recommends that you reduce your sodium intake due to certain medical issues, it is a good idea to keep track of how much sodium you consume during meal times.
The American Heart Association recommends no more than 2,300 mg per day for most adults, with an ideal limit of fewer than 1,500 mg per day, particularly if they have high blood pressure. A teaspoon of salt, for example, has about 2,300 mg of sodium. A daily dose reduction of 1,000 mg can improve blood pressure and heart health.
This logbook is also helpful for those with chronic illness (for example - hypertension, hypotension, dysautonomia, postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome) that experience syncopal events or flares and may need to track the effects of increasing or decreasing sodium intake and symptoms before or after eating.
