While The Great War raged on a world away, Roy Hawk, of Cleveland, Tennessee, met Mabel Thornton of Knoxville, Tennessee, and a wholesome campaign of letter writing was launched. Two months later, The United States declared war on Germany, and their friendship and their ultimate romance would be tested during a perilous era. Roy and Mabel kept writing one another faithfully, earnestly and regularly, recording everything from fleeting emotions, to life promises, to travels far away from Eastern Tennessee.
My Dear Mabel is their letters written from February 1917 to the end of June 1919—letters saved, undisturbed for over a century. At twenty-four, having won the heart of a farmer’s daughter, Roy Hawk enlisted as a private in the United States Army, and within a matter of a couple months was “Over There,” in France, a soldier in the 6th Infantry Division. At twenty-three, in defiance of her parents’ wishes, Mabel Thornton reported to work in Washington, D.C., as a war worker, a clerk in the Adjutant General’s Office, War Department.
A grandson discovered their letters after the death of his father. Their letters are love letters. Their story is one of shared Christian faith, love of family and country, and manifest courage. The reader is invited to be the fourth person in history to read some of these pieces of history.
“Washington gave one grand celebration for the close of the war, Monday night. I don’t think Pennsylvania Ave. can relate such a scene in its history again. I am not exaggerating when I say every foot of space was occupied with machines, street cars, and people and I think the atmosphere was filled all the way to Heaven with praises, horns, and whistles.” Mabel To Roy --- November 13, 1918
