Sinopsis

After six years of working in the woods for his father and only given the roof over his head for wages, Shelby Martin tells his father he has had enough, he is done working for him and he will be leaving in the morning.He finds a place to homestead on the Dead River, below Long Falls. He builds a log cabin and becomes a seasoned trapper. That first winter on his own, is cold with deep snow, he almost starves and he is set upon by wolves, a wolverine and two raccoons. But he does survive and makes a trip to Pasquale Furrier in Lac Megantic.He saves the lives of an Indian Princess, Apona, and her brother, Caponi. A year later he returns and they are married and she returns with him to his home on the Dead River. Game Warden Supervisor Niles Clayton stops by one day and asks Shelby if he would be interested in becoming a game warden. And before leaving he asks Shelby, “Do you know the difference between a summer deer hide and a fall deer hide?”
