Sinopsis

This book examines some of the core issues of the ongoing educational and pedagogical debate, namely effective learning, behaviour management and assessment for learning. My main aim is to find theoretical and practical tools that teachers can deploy while delivering their daily practice and students can use to access their learning easily and make progress over time. This book includes three chapters. The first two chapters are divided into three sections which comprise one academic essay, a research project and support materials and data collected during the enquiry. In the first section I investigate one educational issue presenting the most recent literature reviews and formulate new hypotheses and argumentations. In the second section I discuss a research project that follows the academic essay - to a certain extent it can be conceived as the application of theory to practice. The two research projects presented in this book were carried out within school contexts in England as part of my teacher training. In the third section the reader can consult the materials and data that I produced to complete my study. The final chapter contains the conference transcript of a presentation on peer assessment. This book is primarily suitable to student teachers who are embarking on their teaching career or studying for teacher training in secondary school in the UK. The presented academic essays and research projects are the revised versions of the professional assignments and enquiries produced to successfully complete teacher training and gain a PGCE in 2019 -particular attention is given to RE as a subject specialism, especially when it comes to identify pedagogical approaches and strategies to apply to teaching and learning. Therefore, in the first instance, students can benefit from this book as the topics discussed are currently the focus of the educational and pedagogical debate in the UK and worldwide. Active learning, personalised learning, behaviour management and Assessment for Learning (AfL) are some of the key-concepts that constitute the "matter" or the "substance" of every teacher training course- words that probably never abandon a trainee teacher, even at night! Secondly, this book provides students with good examples of academic writing that can be considered when it comes for them to plan and organise their own professional assignments. Explaining complex ideas at a greater length and depth, selecting, and analysing relevant evidence and citing works and authors meticulously are some of the key features that characterise the writing process behind this book.More experienced teachers can also enjoy reading this book. The educational issues chosen are relevant to anyone involved in education as they are at the heart of teaching and learning. Regardless of the approach teachers adopt and the school of thought they belong to, teaching practice should always provide students with the following “tools”: 1) active learning to make them engaged and help them to develop a sense of ownership and independence; 2) personalised learning to enable them to acquire new skills and enhance their subject knowledge; 3) clear and effective behaviour management strategies to lead students to be intrinsically motivated to behave and work; 4) AfL to encourage learning and motivation by giving importance to progress and achievement rather than failure.
