A daughter of the Old South sets out to find the writers of three letters written in the spring of 1863. Armed with a dedication to primary research, a vivid imagination, and an old red Subaru she journeys into the thick of the American Civil War from Bridgeport, Alabama to frigid Fort Donelson in northwest Tennessee, on to the sultry swamps of Port Hudson, Louisiana, and finally to a place known only as "near big black."
