The Fussy Eater’s Guide to Exploring Food is a step-by-step guide for children and their parents on how to explore new foods. By learning to be a food scientist, children discover the properties of different foods and eventually feel ready to taste and eat them.
Foreword written by Dr Rachel Bryant-Waugh, Consultant Clinical Psychologist:
‘This gem of a book is based on sound principles of good parenting and human learning. Through its adoption of a food scientist approach, the book clearly sets out how to provide the fun, safe, containing structure needed to enable cautious children to test out new food experiences.’
ABOUT THE AUTHORS
Alison Butterworth (Paediatric Occupational Therapist) and Samantha Sargent (Paediatric Dietitian) are both specialists who work in a community NHS multidisciplinary feeding clinic team in London. Dr Kay Toomey (Pediatric Psychologist) developed a successful approach called the ‘SOS (Sequential Oral Sensory) Approach to Feeding’, which is used worldwide by clinicians to support children with difficulties around food and eating.
This book is a step-by-step practical approach to exploring foods for fussy eaters. It is based on the successful adaptation of the SOS Food Scientist program used in the community NHS feeding clinic, where Sam and Ali work, to support a range of children of different ages and needs, including those with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder.
The authors are keen to share these strategies to support a wider group of fussy eaters. The book is intended to be read to children by parents, carers or teachers. Older children may choose to read this book independently or to have an adult read the book with them or to them.
CONTENTS OF THE BOOK
This book uses large child-friendly print and contains real photographs to give clear easy visuals of how children can explore food by being a food scientist and looking at the sensory elements of different foods. Using a graded exposure approach the book supports children in small steps, to become more comfortable with new foods so they will, in their own time, be able to touch, smell, lick, bite and eventually eat them. It aims to help children to engage with food preparation and cooking, in a fun way, in order to get used to touching and handling different foods.
The Fussy Eater’s Guide to Exploring Food contains sections for children to write or draw what the food looks, feels, smells, tastes and sounds like and also ways to teach children how they feel when they are hungry, thirsty or full up.
It concludes with a certificate of completion that can be filled in with the child’s name, and is a practical book that can be used over and over again to explore different foods.
