Play is a well established method of teaching and learning in the early years. But research tells us that play is vital for the development of ALL children. So can play be used as part of an effective pedagogy in the upper stages? And should we still call it play? Here I detail my journey to teaching and learning through introduction of the play principles in the upper stages; the successes, the barriers and practical examples of how the principles of play can be used to enhance learning for older pupils, allowing them opportunities to apply, revisit and retrieve their learning through contextual activities.
