Pursing the Promises of God is a nine week, in-depth study of the book of Joshua.

The Bible is God’s word to humanity. In it, He reveals who He is and the work He is doing. Each book of the Bible provides insight into specific characteristics of God.

Through Scripture, God’s nature and character unfold story by story, book by book.

The book of Genesis introduces God as Creator, an almighty God of promise and covenant. In Exodus, God is Deliverer; He redeems His people from slavery and brings them to Himself. The journey through Numbers reveals God to be sovereign over the way of His people, completely worthy of trust and obedience. As we progress through the book of Joshua, we will see that God is faithful; He keeps the promises He has made to His people.

As the book of Joshua opens, the Israelites emerge from their years of wilderness wanderings on the outskirts of Canaan, with the entirety of God’s promise before them. The land was theirs, an abundant inheritance from the Lord, but in order for the Israelites to obtain the land, they would have to go in and take it. The people could not receive the promise if they did not have the heart to pursue it.

The journey of the Israelites as they fought for the land of Canaan provides tremendous insight into the journey we take as believers today. Just as the Israelites had to learn through battle to follow, trust, and obey God in pursuit of His good promises, we who follow Christ must do the same.

Joshua is a book about a faithful God training up a faithful people. It is a book that tells of both victory and defeat, a wondrous display of God’s mercy and His judgment. The book of Joshua both comforts and convicts, challenging its reader to reckon with their own resolve to pursue the promises of God. Perhaps most notably, Joshua is a book that boldly beckons followers of Christ to be strong and courageous - as we follow His lead, trust in His promises, and lay claim to our own inheritance.

This nine week, in-depth study can be used for individual, small, or large group study.
