After king David of ancient Israel secured the stronghold of Zion, it became the city of David. Soon afterwards, he erected the “Tabernacle of David” where he housed the Ark of the Covenant of the God of Israel. So, Zion became the dwelling place of God. That was historical Zion in the past.
The prophet Amos in his ninth chapter foretold of the re-building again of the tabernacle of David, which was fallen down, within the context of the house of Jacob. However in the fifteenth chapter of the Acts, the duality of this prophecy was pointed out by James the apostle. He explained that the re-building again of the ruins thereof, will be of the Gentiles, just as much of the Jews. The present Zion therefore is not merely geographical, but the spiritual Ekklēsia of Christ. Our calling is to this spiritual Zion into which we have all come, according to Paul in his letter to the Hebrews.
The present will eventually morph into the Eternal Zion, the heavenly New Jerusalem. That will be the eternal tabernacle of God where He dwells with mankind for ever.
In this typology, we re-discover the harbingers of divine Sovereign Revival: revelation of the mystery of the Gospel, being a disciple and making disciples for Jesus. Living by faith in holiness and fear of the Lord as disciples who are manifesting the glory of Christ’s Ekklēsia is prerequisite for the Church to possess her possessions.
