John Irvin and Barrett, two teenage boys, set out to prove their manhood by canoeing up the Columbia River to Canada and the Arrow Lakes. For John Irving it is to visit the site where his mother and father (killed in the Korean war) honeymooned, and for Barrett to escape a relationship with his girl friend. An Indian woman they rescue from drowning leads them out of the romantic worlds they envisioned into the harsh world of reality.
