Simon Innes grew up in North Norfolk and was bullied a lot at school. This eventually culminated in a horrific act which led to dire consequences. Out of this Simon committed a crime of which he lives with the repercussions of. At his lowest ebb he had a slight change of fortune and some good news following a legacy. An elderly woman, reputed to be a witch had left him something.
However, his constant low self-esteem and troubled conscience leads to him fleeing life at Paston College, North Walsham, to see a bit of the world. He seeks adventures and love, which takes him off abroad. He spends time in Germany, Northern Ireland, Canada and Holland, with the British Army.
Wherever he goes he is followed by demons who haunt his dreams and posses the living around him. They pursue him until the final confrontation when these night hags attack when him whilst he is fully awake. In one respect Simon believes that he comes out unscathed. The reality is that he had lost the one person he loved the most. And has found he has a new set of battles to fight.
This is the second book in the 'Why' trilogy by JGC O'Connell. The first book being: 'Why are Ghosts afraid of the Living?' Both stories are related and intertwined in parts. However, they are written from different perspectives.
