This final lecture is inspired by The Last Lecture (Hyperion) by Randy Pausch, a distinguished professor at Carnegie Mellon University, who, before his untimely passing in 2008, shared profound wisdom with students and readers alike. His work, imbued with hope, purpose, and reflection, continues to resonate as a guide for those embarking on new chapters of their lives. In that same spirit, I aim to offer my own insights, derived from nearly five decades spent in academia.
Over those fifty years, I had the privilege of engaging with thousands of students, many of whom I am proud to call lifelong friends. Through candid discussions, shared experiences, and professional feedback from employers, I’ve been fortunate to witness the enduring impact of education. Equally influential have been the great mentors I’ve observed along the way—individuals whose example shaped not only my professional path but also my personal ethos. The advice I share here represents a synthesis of these experiences for living a productive, happy, and fulfilling life.
