I’ve loved animals my whole life. Our very first dog was named Inky. I have no idea how many breeds were mixed into him—we called him “polygenetic.” He wasn’t exactly what you’d call a nice dog. He bit me in the foot once, hard enough to need stitches. That spot still stings when it’s cold outside. He also bit my brother in the thigh—a few inches higher and I might have ended up with a sister!
And yet…I loved Inky. If I could love that dog, imagine the love I have for the truly sweet, wonderful ones who followed.
Over the past thirty years, we’ve had five dogs. Each one was uniquely good, sweet, and wise in their own way. This book is about the three most recent: Lucy, Vegas, and Cola.
They are my heart.
To be honest, I’ve often preferred their company to that of most people. They loved unconditionally. They didn’t care what I looked like. They followed me anywhere and simply wanted to be by my side, present and content. And—with the exception of Vegas (who talked a lot…shepherds do that!)—they never argued with me.
In the pages ahead, you’ll find their stories. I hope you’ll come to love and appreciate them as much as I do.
