Sinopsis

What Does It Take to Survive the Most Grueling Test on Earth? A Doctor's Unique Perspective on Navy SEAL Hell Week.

Most books tell you what happened during Hell Week. Few explain how the human body and mind cope and survive it.

In Six Days of Impossible, Dr. Robert Adams combines his dual expertise as a Navy SEAL graduate (BUD/S Class 81) and a practicing physician to dissect the legendary six-day ordeal. Going beyond the standard success-and-failure story, Dr. Adams analyzes the physiological trauma, the bone-shattering cold, and the psychological breaking points that define this ultimate test of will.

Through the shared recollections of the eleven men who graduated with him, Adams reveals the invisible line between quitting and persevering. He explores why no medical study can predict success, why the "frog brain" takes over when logic fails, and how ordinary men discover an extraordinary capacity for suffering.

He searches for and discovers a common thread in their unconquerable souls that marked each man for undeniable success in training and in life.

Inside this gripping memoir, you will discover:

    • The Science of Suffering: A medical breakdown of hypothermia, extreme sleep deprivation, and physical exhaustion during Hell Week.
    • The Survivor's Mindset: Insight into the common psychological traits shared by those who ring the bell vs. those who survive to graduate.
    • Untold Brotherhood: Intimate stories from the men of Class 81, including Medal of Honor recipient Mike Thornton and SEAL instructor Steve Frisk.
    • Then vs. Now: A comparison of established training methods against today's scientifically monitored programs.

Whether you are an aspiring candidate, a parent, a veteran, or simply fascinated by the limits of human endurance, this book offers a raw, analytical, and deeply moving look at the making of a warrior.

"Courage is not having the strength to go on; it is going on when you don't have the strength."

Acerca del autor

Robert Adams, MD, MBA, has lived the kind of life most people only read about. A former U.S. Navy SEAL, Adams spent 14 years in the Navy, 12 of them in the SEAL Teams, before serving 18 years in the U.S. Army. During his military career, he rose to become Command Surgeon for the Army's elite Delta Force and deployed to Iraq with the 82nd Airborne Division. A third-generation graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Adams later made an unusual decision: he left the SEAL Teams to attend medical school on an Army scholarship, eventually becoming a physician at age forty. For more than 35 years in family medicine, Dr. Adams delivered babies, treated trauma and disease, cared for military families, and served soldiers in both war and peace. His experiences gave him a rare front-row seat to the limits of human endurance, courage, sacrifice, and survival. Those experiences now fuel his writing. Dr. Adams' books bring readers into worlds few ever see, from the brutal reality of Navy SEAL Hell Week to the emotional highs and lows of practicing medicine in both small towns and combat zones to the personal letters of a Union soldier during the American Civil War. His books include: - Six Days of Impossible: Navy SEAL Hell Week - A Doctor Looks Back- Swords and Saints: A Doctor's Journey- My Dear Sara: Civil War Letters 1861-1865. Through gripping storytelling and firsthand insight, Robert Adams gives readers an unforgettable look at what it means to endure, serve, and lead. Review for Six Days of Impossible Navy SEAL Hell Week: A must-read for the inside story of what it takes to become a Navy SEAL.Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 20175-STARS! As an ex-Navy man, I thought I knew something about the SEAL program. Was I ever wrong? Dr. Adams weaves a story of the exploits of his BUD/S 81 team in a way that is awe-inspiring in what it takes to "not ring the bell" and quit. We owe a great debt of gratitude to the men who have pushed through personal barriers to be honored to wear the Trident. Dr. Adams's book is a page-turner. Yes, you know it is tough going and that men will drop out, but it makes you want to keep reading, because you want to know who will succeed and how they can endure the torture and sleepless nights to finally make it through Hell Week. But that is only the beginning. Other tests lie ahead before they are allowed to call themselves Navy Seals. I enjoyed this book immensely, from the beginning, when we learn why Dr. Adams even considered becoming a SEAL, to the end, when we find out about the special bond these men share in the short term and throughout their lives. Hooyah!
