Sinopsis

Repton. AD 873, the Great Heathen Army comes..

The story follows Eadric, a young monk tasked with guarding the bones of Saint Wigstan at the monastery in Repton. As the Great Heathen Army, led by Jarl Guthrum, invades Mercia, Eadric and fellow monk Inga flee to protect themselves and the relics. They find refuge with Bealdric, a hermit monk, and later with Alrik, a Norwegian farmer settled in Mercia. The story culminates 39 years later in a battle for Derby led by Lady Aethelfled against the Danes, where sons and grandsons Eadric, Sithric, and Sigurd join the fight. They face the realities of war and loss but embody how the English and Danish communities might come to embrace their shared history and the hope of a united Mercia.
The novel explores themes of loyalty, faith, and resilience amidst adversity.
