Two ordinary Spennymoor miners, Thomas “Tosser” Angus and Joe Hughes – best friends since boyhood in the cages of Dean and Chapter Colliery – answered the call in 1939 with the 9th Battalion Durham Light Infantry. What followed was five unbroken years of war: the retreat to Dunkirk, the burning sands of Alamein, the blood-soaked ridges of Tunisia, the nightmare crossing of the Simeto at Primosole Bridge, the frozen hell of Monte Cassino, and the final push across the Po to the Alps. They marched, fought, and somehow survived every major campaign of the British Army from 1940 to 1945.
Between them and home waited a third legend: Piper, the black greyhound bitch who, in peacetime, had torn up every track from Spennymoor to White City and paid off mortgages with her winnings. While Tosser and Joe fought abroad, Piper kept the flame alive on disused railway lines and recreation grounds, the fastest dog County Durham ever saw.
And running through the heart of their story is the little pale-blue Fiat 500 Topolino they “liberated” in Sicily – christened the Spennymoor Express – that carried dispatches, wounded men, wine, goats, and hope for twenty-two months from Catania to Verona.
This is not a tale of generals or glory. It is the true, unvarnished story of two marras who went doon the pit at fourteen, faced Hitler’s finest with the same stubborn courage they showed the Low Main seam, and came home to pull their boots on again the very next shift.
Told in the plain, proud voice of the Durham coalfield, with laughter and grief in equal measure, The Spennymoor Express is a love letter to the working men who did their bit and never thought they were heroes – and to the town, the dog, and the little car that carried them all the way home.
“They just went back down the bloody pit the next day. But Spennymoor remembers.”
