A lion is prowling Kemet, the black land of Egypt, 1460 B.C. Men are found dead, their chests sawed open and their hearts removed. This means their existence in the afterlife is destroyed. Prince Isunure and his family are retired and living quietly in Nubet until Pharaoh Hatshepsut calls him back under threat of punishment. She has a plan for a great expedition to the fabled land of Punt and commands Isunure to organize the expedition.
As he works to complete his mission, she orders him to solve these murders and catch the lion that feeds on human hearts. Torn between the two tasks, Isunure must also evade assassination attempt against his family and himself by jealous rivals and criminal power seekers.
His son, Bennefer, and cousin, Meryt-Amun will become unwitting accomplices to his progress in pursuing the lions in Kemet.
