What happens when a dream vacation turns into an unexpected life lesson?
Our 10-year-old author left her home in the United States for what was supposed to be a one-week summer trip to Asia. But the journey took an unexpected turn when her parents’ U.S. visa approval was delayed for two months instead of one week, preventing the family from returning home.
What began as a short vacation soon became a frightening and uncertain time. The family even began preparing for the possibility of settling permanently in India, the country where her parents were born.
India felt very different from the life the author and her little sister had known in the United States. Far from their school, libraries, summer camps, and friends, the two young girls had to adjust to a completely new environment while moving from city to city during the wait.
To cope with the uncertainty, the author turned the experience into an imaginative space mission. In her mind, she became an astronaut traveling from Earth to Mars, navigating unexpected obstacles along the way. Whenever things felt difficult, she imagined calling NASA’s mission control and saying, “Houston, we have a problem.”
Inspired by a true story, this heartfelt children’s book explores resilience, family, and the power of imagination during challenging times.
