I’ve spent years dealing with people who say no for a living.
Airline agents. Bank reps. Corporate gatekeepers. School teachers. My mom. The polite ones, the clueless ones, and the ones who clearly woke up ready to ruin your day. I’m convinced most of them work at the DMV.
But this isn’t a customer service manual. That’s boring.
Never Take is more like sitting down over coffee or a beer and talking about what actually happens when two people run into a problem, neither wants to budge, but somehow still find a way through it. Usually.
Sometimes pushing works. Other times, it makes things worse. Yelling never helps, even when it would feel really good in the moment. And every now and then, the smartest move is to walk away and keep your sanity intact. Your blood pressure will thank you.
Some of these stories are frustrating. Many are ridiculous. All of them actually happened.
Oh, and then there’s the vertical-versus-horizontal dynamic we’ve been dealing with since we were kids.
Just because someone is bigger, taller, older, seemingly wiser, well-dressed, confident, or your mom doesn’t make them better. It usually just means they’re in charge. That’s not the same thing.
But it doesn’t always have to be that way. An equal partnership, a horizontal dynamic, can work just fine, as long as both sides know how to play together in the sandbox. And, more importantly, when not to throw sand.
A lot of bad decisions stick around because people stop questioning things the moment they come from someone “in charge.”
On the flip side, asking the right question at the right time can change everything. Not because it’s clever. It just forces people to stop and think for a second, which is surprisingly rare.
None of this is theory. It’s all pulled from real situations, where things either worked out or didn’t, and why.
If you’ve ever been told “there’s nothing we can do” and knew that wasn’t true, this will feel familiar. And if you’ve ever been the one saying no, you might see yourself in here, too.
The next round is on me.
