You prayed in the car outside the doctor's office. You prayed the night of the diagnosis, and again the night you understood what the diagnosis meant. You took over the pills, then the checkbook, then the driving. People told you that what you are doing is beautiful, that God will not give you more than you can handle, and that you should take care of yourself. Then they drove home.
If you are caring for a mother, a husband, a father, or a friend who can no longer manage alone, and you have begun to wonder whether the exhaustion, the resentment, and the thoughts you have never said out loud mean something is wrong with your faith, this book was written for you.
Dr. Douglas Reece takes apart the beliefs that have made the load heavier than it needs to be and puts Scripture in its place. Here you will find:
- A 25-question caregiver assessment across five areas (body, heart, faith, people, and ground) that shows where you really are
- How to tell the Holy Spirit's conviction from the voice of condemnation
- What it means to honor your father and mother when you cannot do everything
- Why Jesus left people who still needed Him, and why rest is a command rather than a reward
- Help for grieving someone who is still here, and for the day she no longer knows your name
- Word-for-word scripts for nine of the hardest family conversations, with a printable agenda and notes template
- An "If Something Happens to Me" page you can fill in once and photocopy
- Guidance for pastors and small-group leaders, including a sermon for Caregiver Sunday
- Two caregivers' stories, told in their own words
This book will not tell you to pray more, and it will not tell you that what you are doing is beautiful. It will help you see accurately, rest without guilt, ask for help out loud, and keep going.
Scripture quotations are from the New King James Version.
Pair it with the companion devotional, Ninety Days for the Weary Caregiver*: five minutes a day of Scripture, reflection, and prayer.
