Sinopsis

THE LIGHT DOESN'T SEARCH THE SEA.

IT SEARCHES YOU.

Mara Rolle came back to Blackwater Cay to sell a dead man's house. A week, maybe ten days: sign the papers, empty her father's rooms, and take the last ferry out of the island that raised her.

By her first morning ashore, sheets and blankets hang over windows up and down the island. Nobody will tell her why.

They will not say the word lighthouse. Not the men on the fuel dock, not the woman under the customs awning, not Noah Bain, who has been giving her acceptable answers to difficult questions since they were fourteen. On Blackwater Cay, silence is never an absence of information. It is a way of holding information until everyone agrees who is allowed to have it.

Because at 12:16 the night before she landed, Blackwater Light came on.

Blackwater Light was shut down before most of the island's adults were born. There is no keeper. And the beam that woke over the roofs is not turning across the water.

It is turning across the island.

Where the light lands, it takes you out of your own body and puts you inside someone else's worst hour. An old woman becomes a child in the rain, small hands pressed flat on a cistern lid, holding it down while her brother strikes the wood from underneath - three times, then once, then not again. She feels the love. She feels the hate. She feels the lid jump under her palms. She never had a brother.

And the memories leave marks. In a pantry rebuilt after the last hurricane, a broom handle taps tile and comes back hollow. Whatever is down there is still down there.

The light is going house by house, opening the island's dead one room at a time - and every slow pass of the beam moves one lot closer to her father's door.

Mara gave herself ten days.

The light will not need them.
