In 1230, the Teutonic Knights crossed the Vistula River into the Prussian wilderness, carrying with them the legal authority of the Holy Roman Emperor, the spiritual sanction of the papacy, and the institutional ambition of an organisation that had no intention of leaving. What followed was one of the most violent and consequential campaigns in the history of medieval Europe - a sixty-five-year war of conquest that destroyed a people, transformed a landscape, and built a colonial state whose shadow extended across seven centuries of Baltic history.
The Prussian Uprisings tells the story of that war from both sides of the siege wall. It follows the Teutonic Order's methodical advance through the forests and river valleys of the Baltic coast, its masterpiece of institutional logistics, and its ruthless administrative consolidation of conquered territory. But it also follows the Old Prussians - the confederation of clans who resisted the crusade through five major uprisings across five decades - and above all it follows Herkus Monte, the Natangian commander educated at Magdeburg who turned the enemy's own military doctrine against it, and whose campaigns came closer than any other indigenous resistance to breaking the crusading enterprise.
This is narrative history at its most urgent: the story of a sophisticated forest civilisation fighting for survival against the most institutionally powerful military organisation of the medieval world, and what was lost when that fight was finally lost.

Angus Roe-Orr grew up in the west of Ireland, where the layered memory of conquest and cultural dispossession gave him an early and lasting interest in the human cost of historical violence. He has spent many years researching the military, legal, and social history of medieval northern Europe, with a particular focus on the crusading enterprises of the Baltic frontier and the indigenous peoples whose worlds those enterprises destroyed. He is drawn to the stories that survive only in fragments - in a handful of sixteenth-century catechisms, in the place names of a landscape whose original inhabitants left no written record, in the amber washing up on beaches that were fought over in the thirteenth century and forgotten in the twenty-first. The Prussian Uprisings is his attempt to bring the full weight of that fragmentary evidence to bear on a history that deserves far wider attention than it has received in the English-speaking world.
