In the year 2070, a valley in California is left desolate, with most people having fled eastward, except for David's family. Throughout his short life, David has faced unimaginable challenges, including resorting to eating insects and worms to satisfy his constant hunger. With animals, plants, and clean water all vanished, the only well in California that once provided drinking water is now dry.
David's father decides they must head east, where the government claims there's plenty of food and water. However, what the U.S. government fails to mention is that the journey of three thousand miles on foot, without food or water, is essentially a death sentence. As David and his family leave their sole shelter in search of water, they cling to the hope that a map might lead them to a well believed to hold water and life. Their quest for the well will take them on a harrowing journey filled with despair, unexpected revelations, and a string of misfortunes that will challenge David's determination to survive.
