One day, you receive the phone call that changes everything. Your grandchild has been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D).
You feel heartbroken. You are overwhelmed with worry and questions.
You are unsure how to help.
Grandparent Conversations About Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) is a compassionate, practical guide written specifically for grandparents of children with type 1 diabetes. Whether you are a grandparent to a newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes child or have years of experience with T1D, this book will help you navigate the steep learning curve and give you hope for a bright future.
What grandparents should know about type 1 diabetes:
• Type 1 diabetes explained simply—without medical overwhelm
• What to expect with insulin and daily diabetes care to help you feel prepared
• How to become a valuable resource to your grandchild and their parents
• How to move from worry and uncertainty to confidence and hope through knowledge and reassurance
• The value of practical insight from grandparents who walked the path and found their way forward
This grandparent guide to type 1 diabetes was written by two grandmothers with 15 years of combined experience supporting a grandchild with type 1 diabetes. It was inspired by the resilience and courage of our grandchildren, the dedication of their families, and what we learned from medical and mental health professionals about managing type 1 diabetes in children.
Most importantly, we found comfort and hope in a community of other T1D grandparents. Their questions, conversations, and stories shaped this book into guidance grandparents most want—and need—as they lovingly support their grandchild through the highs and lows of T1D.
Grandparent Conversations About Type 1 Diabetes is the heartfelt inspiration you need when you don’t know where to turn. Relevant insights and emotional support for grandparents will give you the confidence to walk alongside your grandchild during every step of their T1D journey.
