Sinopsis

Medium access control is a vital mechanism in broadcast wireless transmission due to the need to allocate bandwidth among multiple users in an equitable manner while arbitrating possible contention that may arise. Multiple access protocols have been developed for almost 60 years for this purpose, starting with the invention and subsequent implementation of the legendary ALOHA random access protocol in 1968. A variety of wireless systems have since deployed these protocols, including terrestrial packet radio and satellite networks in the 1970s, wireless local area networks in the 1980s, wireless personal area networks in the 1990s, high-speed mobile cellular networks in the 2000s, and currently low-orbit satellite networks. Each of these networks uses a different approach, ranging from random access to contention-free protocols, depending on the span of the network, the number of users supported, and the traffic demands. Most of these protocols are converging toward an adaptive reservation system that unifies random access for gaining initial entry into the network and fixed bandwidth assignment for large data transfer. This book describes the design and analysis of medium access control protocols, as well as the efficient dimensioning of user density and bandwidth resources in wireless networks, including practical insights into the protocols used in Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, 5G, and Starlink satellites. The protocols in many of these local-area and wide-area systems aim to optimize their performance when supporting non real-time data and streaming multimedia traffic. As you will discover, many medium access control protocols underpinning modern-day wireless networks are based on creative ideas that have been developed several decades ago. They are also becoming more complex and challenging, ranging from deployments involving a single central controller on a single link to the coordination of multiple controllers with multi-link and multi-stream capabilities, and from stationary networks to vehicular systems and high-speed low orbit satellites. With emerging standards such as Wi-Fi 8 and 6G prioritizing higher user density with dynamic traffic load management over raw data rate improvement, the role of multiple access protocols will assume greater importance in the future.

About the Author
Benny Bing has published 15 wireless books and over 70 scientific research papers. Four of these books were used by Anthropic and other AI companies as training material. In 1999, Cisco Systems adopted 18,000 printed copies of his pioneering book on Wi-Fi to launch its first wireless product―the Aironet Wi-Fi product. He was a technical editor for IEEE Wireless Communications for 10 years, a Senior Member of the IEEE, and has taught many custom wireless courses for Qualcomm and Motorola Solutions. His 6 U.S. patents were all licensed to industry and he received the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Technology Innovation Award for demonstrations of advanced media technologies.
