No sound. No warning. Every car on the highway coasts to a stop. Every phone goes black. A small plane slides silently out of the sky and disappears behind the treeline.
Kevin Durane is standing in his garage with a spool of fishing line in his hand. His six year old daughter Anna is one point four miles away, on her first day of first grade. His wife Mara is eleven miles downtown, on the eighth floor of a building with dead elevators.
He has one thing nobody else has: a 1994 pickup truck with no computer in it.
Over the next seventy two hours, Kevin will drive through a city holding its breath. He will bargain with a police officer who has no radio, no orders, and no chain of command. He will hold a dying man in a church parking lot and learn his name too late. He will discover that the most dangerous thing he owns is the only thing that still runs.
Help is not coming. Not today. Not tomorrow.
Seventy two hours is all anyone gets.
