Diagnose before you replace. Measure before you condemn.
Most of the world's watches are quartz. Almost nobody is taught to repair them.
A high-grade quartz caliber contains a gear train machined to the same tolerances as a mechanical one, running in jewelled bearings and wearing in the same way. It contains a stepping motor whose rotor turns exactly half a revolution, thirty-one million times a year, without missing a step. All of it is serviceable. Almost none of it is taught.
This is not a book about how quartz watches work. It is a working method manual, a diagnostic reference, a set of bench checklists and a service record system, written by a WOSTEP-certified master watchmaker with thirty years at the bench.
What is inside:30 original technical diagrams, including ten step-by-step procedural illustrations showing the tool in position, the working angle, and the mistake to avoid.
Caliber quick-reference tables giving manufacturer-specified current draw, coil resistance, rate tolerance and cell for around fifty caliber families - and stating plainly where a figure is not published.
The signal chain end to end, and how to find where it breaks.
Complete service: disassembly order, four-bath cleaning, inspection criteria, lubrication map, reassembly and testing.
Electronic diagnostics - voltage under load, coil resistance, current draw, and what each reading actually tells you.
Battery chemistry, and the one substitution that destroys movements.
Water resistance stated honestly, and how to explain it to a customer.
Chronograph, solar, digital and multifunction movements.
Vintage quartz restoration, and why the circuit is the part you cannot replace.
12 worked diagnostic cases with the readings taken, the fault found, and the lesson from each.
Reference tables, procedure checklists and service record forms.
For watchmakers, repair technicians, serious hobbyists and vintage-watch collectors - and for anyone who has been told a quartz watch is not worth opening.
Independent and unaffiliated. Not authorised or endorsed by any watch manufacturer. Brand and caliber names are used descriptively for identification only.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Diagnose before you replace. Measure before you condemn. Most quartz watches that reach a bench are not broken in the way they look. A cell that reads healthy on the bench collapses under load; a coil judged 'out of range' by a remembered rule is perfectly sound for its caliber; a watch that will not start on a new cell simply needs its AC reset. This manual is built to catch those faults in the right order, before a good movement is condemned. It is a bench manual, a diagnostic reference and a set of working checklists in one book, and it is illustrated throughout: 38 drawings, including 13 step-by-step plates that show each procedure panel by panel on the same movement, with the step numbers matching the text.Inside: - Movement disassembly and reassembly in the order the layers come apart, with lubrication points and the coasting test drawn where they happen- Battery replacement done properly: cell chemistry and sizes, contact cleaning, AC reset, current drain and leakage- Electronic diagnostics: cell voltage under load, coil resistance, current consumption in microamps, and how a quartz tester separates a motor fault from a circuit fault- Caliber reference tables with manufacturer-specified current, coil resistance, rate and cell for analogue, chronograph, meca-quartz, high-accuracy, solar and kinetic movements- Case work: snap-back and screw-back opening, stem release, hands and dial removal, gasket replacement and pressure testing- Fitting a replacement movement and cutting the stem to length- Chronograph modules and reset-to-zero faults, solar secondary cells and charging, digital displays and the zebra strip- Vintage quartz: what is worth restoring, the parts problem, and conservative restoration- Twelve worked diagnostic cases, procedure checklists, service record forms, a glossary and an indexWritten for watch repair technicians, serious hobbyists building a quartz bench, vintage-watch collectors who want to know what a service should include, and watchmaking students who need the electrical side explained as carefully as the mechanical one. Please note: the illustrations are technical drawings, not photographs. They are drawn to show what a photograph hides: the order of the layers, the angle of a tool, where oil goes and where it never should. For reference photographs of a specific caliber, the manufacturer's technical sheet is the place to start. Nº de ref. del artículo: 9798192446867
