There are combs. There are chairs. There is a thing that hums. And on a hook, three pink capes.
The stranger is tall. The stranger has enormous hands and scissors in a top pocket. And then the stranger says, "Hi, Wren." Which raises the immediate and urgent question of how a total stranger knows a name.
The chair goes up. The cape goes on, and nobody asks, and it is PINK, and Wren's arms go in and stay in, and Wren is now a small pink cone with hair.
Then the mirror. And in the mirror there is a Wren. And standing right behind that Wren, there is someone. Watching. Holding scissors.
Wren does not move. Wren does not breathe.
Until the stranger crouches all the way down beside the chair. Not up. Not over. Down. So four eyes end up level. And says the one thing that makes it possible:
"It's your head. You're only lending it."
Lending isn't giving. Lending means you get it back.
A warm, funny rhyming read-aloud about sitting still while somebody you have never met is nice to you.
