Six centuries after Saehur vanished into the breath of the Red Basins, the people of Khevar have begun to settle around wells, ration stones, body-houses, quarry paths, and sacred roads. The wandering age is fading. Memory is no longer carried only by song, ash, and spoken names. Now the living have begun to believe that stone can hold what grief is too weak to carry.
When Tavren, basin-chief of Khevar, dies during a season of drought and fear, High Dune-Priest Maresh declares that an ordinary cairn is no longer enough. Tavren’s breath must be housed in stone, beside the road that leads towards the blackened Spiral of the First Breath.
For Neyat, a death-worker and keeper of names, the dead must remain people before they become symbols. Yet as the House rises from rough-cut stone, dragged by exhausted hands beneath the desert sun, sacred remembrance begins to harden into something more dangerous. Labour becomes duty. Duty becomes debt. Captives, workers, mourners, and children are drawn into the shadow of a monument that promises unity while quietly reshaping the living.
Within the House, an older truth waits to be buried or preserved: the First Breath was once mortal, and his name was Saehur.
The House of the First Breath is Book 2 in Chronicles of the Spiral Ages, a mythic historical fantasy series following the rise of civilisation, sacred memory, ancient desert cultures, divine echoes, and the long transformation of myth into power.
