Bright Side of the Equation: A Science Fiction Tree, Short Story - Tapa blanda

Sinopsis

He thinks she’s Ms Right. He thinks he ought to be Mr Right. She doesn’t agree. None of which matters when a slow spreading, fatal illness disrupts their future.

Excerpt: I walked over to the woman, practicing every bit of training in how to deal with terrible situations, and said, “Actually, I could use some help, please.” “Certainly.” Was that a smile, or a smirk? It all happened too fast. I wished time would slow down. She had a name tag, Gazel. “I need a gift for a woman, but I’m not sure what she would like.” She raised an eyebrow, “Okay?” “Would you rather receive cut flowers or a potted plant?” There was a slightly more positive flicker in her face to a plant than flowers – based on what I learned in lie detection, face reading classes. “Well, that’s a rather personal preference,” she said. “I doubt if she would like the same thing as me.” “Yes, I understand, but I’d like to know your opinion, Gazel.” I pronounced it, Ja-zel, but what if she’d been named after the antelope? “Um, I think I’ll go with a plant. What do you have?”
