A Walk Through Love — a bilingual collection of 49 lyrical prose pieces and letters, each in traditional Chinese with an English rendering, tracing first longing, devotion, parting and the grace of letting go.
Written across a single turning season, these short chapters turn ordinary days into small ceremonies of remembrance — as love letters, as meditation, as a bridge between two languages.
For readers of romantic and reflective prose, for anyone who has loved and lost, and for learners of Chinese & English. 49 bilingual essays · 232 pages.
The thought of the book is both ancient and contemporary. Ancient, because it breathes with the idioms of Daoist naturalness and Buddhist non-attachment: the ordinary mind, the unborn, the unattached, the pure light of the heart. Contemporary, because it is written against the age of fashion, advertising, endless desire, and the cult of perfection. Ge Ye does not build a system. He offers a temper: self-sufficient, compassionate, ironic, tender. His love is not conquest but hospitality; not a demand for eternity, but an eternity already present in the moment one holds another’s hand.
Artistically, A Stroll of Love moves between essay, prose poem, aphorism, and journal. Its sentences are short, plain, and breathing; its images are domestic and exact. A rice-straw fire, a cup of tea, a grapevine that has climbed into the trees, a kitten’s disdain—these are not decorations but instruments of attention. The voice is gentle but not soft; it can be sharp about vanity, cruelty, and self-deception. It can also smile. This smile, quiet and forgiving, is one of the book’s great charms.
Translating such a book is an act of listening. The Chinese original relies on rhythm, parallelism, four-character phrases, and silences that English can easily over-explain. I have tried to keep the line of thought clear without flattening its mystery, to preserve the recurrence of key words—love, heart, nature, ordinary, eternal—without turning them into slogans. Where the original moves in the register of Daoist or Buddhist thought, I have used English that remains readable and unsectarian. Where it becomes lyrical, I have trusted the image. Where it becomes intimate, I have not tried to make it more explicit than it is.
I do not present this translation as a substitute for the original. It is a bridge, a walking companion. If these pages allow an English reader to feel the autumn light on the page, to hear the wind in the trees, to sense the strange, ordinary seriousness of love, then the stroll has not been in vain.
In this bilingual edition, each piece appears twice: first in my English translation, then, on the facing page, in the original Traditional Chinese. The Chinese is given not as a literal gloss but as the text itself—the very language in which these thoughts first took shape. I hope that, whether you read one language or both, you will hear in them the same steady voice: the voice of one who loved completely.
