Sinopsis

Some patterns should never be left unfinished.

Claire Hedley came to Nether Combe to rebuild a life the violin had ended for her. In the bell tower of St. Osyth's she found what she was looking for: a discipline exact enough to quiet grief, seven other people who needed her to be on time, and a village that had kept one rule for two hundred years and would not explain it.

Then she found Fenwick's Silence.

It is a change-ringing composition, abandoned in 1826, four rows from its end, on the morning its author climbed the tower to test one row he had written down that he was not ready to finish. He died beneath his own bells. The village has rung around the row ever since.

Claire rings it by accident, on an ordinary Tuesday in November.

The dead start coming back to Nether Combe in the order the mathematics forgot to call them—oldest first, 1826 first—confused, cold, and looking for houses that were pulled down a century ago.

They are not angry. That is the worst of it.

They are lost, and they are getting closer to the present with every week, and the churchwarden's arithmetic says six weeks before the queue reaches graves that still get flowers.

To send them home, Claire has to persuade a fractured band of ringers to finish a peal no living person has heard to its end—five thousand and forty changes, one morning, no stopping once it begins.

The arithmetic tells them how long it will take.

It does not tell them what finishing will cost.

CHANGE RINGING is a standalone folk horror novella built on the real mathematics of English church bells: no curse, no demon, no haunted object. Only an unfinished sentence, and the two hundred years a village spent being frightened of the wrong half of it.
