Building Information Modelling has, within the working lifetime of a single generation of construction professionals, moved from a niche research interest to a mainstream, and in many jurisdictions mandatory, foundation of professional practice across architecture, engineering, and construction. This transformation has been driven not by any single technology but by the convergence of parametric modelling software, open data standards, cloud-based collaboration, and a growing body of international standards — chief among them the ISO 19650 series — that together allow a building's design, construction, and operational information to be captured, coordinated, and reused with a rigour that was simply not achievable in the era of drawing-based practice.
This book was written to provide a single, comprehensive, and structured account of that transformation: what BIM is, how it developed, how it is practised across each of its recognised "dimensions" — geometry, time, cost, sustainability, and facilities management — and how it is governed, coordinated, and delivered on real projects through the standards, plans, and contractual frameworks examined in the book's later chapters. It is intended equally for students of architecture, civil and structural engineering, and construction management encountering BIM systematically for the first time, and for practising professionals seeking a structured, standards-referenced text against which to consolidate and extend experience gained on individual projects.The book is organised to be read sequentially, building each chapter's discussion on concepts introduced earlier, though practitioners with a specific interest — clash detection, cost estimation, or ISO 19650 collaboration, for instance — will find each chapter reasonably self-contained, with cross-references provided throughout to related discussion elsewhere in the text. Figures, tables, chapter summaries, key term lists, and review questions are provided throughout to support both independent study and use in a structured taught course.
