The stolen gear isn't hidden. It's keeping other people alive.
Several roads across the reach have been stripped.
There are people behind them.
Kestrel's job sounds simple: find the missing marks and drums, make those roads readable again, and bring people out.
But the gear has not been sitting in forgotten warehouses.
It has been sold. Traded. Installed. Worked. One cache is keeping somebody else's lane open. Another was bought honestly. Whole settlements now depend on machinery that belonged somewhere else first.
Recovering it means changing another person's world.
So Kestrel goes cache to cache across the frontier: racing for equipment in low gravity, working broken roads, flying difficult approaches and making trades where nobody has enough to spare.
Three roads still need to be opened.
Not every road can come back.
And the crew has to decide what they are willing to take from people who need exactly the same thing.
The Last Cache is Book Four of The Far Roads. The Far Roads is complete. Kestrel is not.
