Sinopsis

In the mountains of Virginia there is a paper that is nothing but numbers. Whoever reads it finds what a man named Beale buried in 1821. Nobody ever has.

Your mom's airline sent her to a hangar in the Blue Ridge. In Grandpa's box, the paper says: Montvale. The key is a book. I never counted past line one. You hate reading. Lucky puts his paw on the paper. You decide.

A gamebook for readers 9 to 12 where every choice has real consequences. Teo is twelve. His mom fixes airplanes, and when an airline somewhere in the world has a plane it can't fix, it sends her, for months. So he knows what it's like to land where he doesn't know anyone. This time the only way to the treasure is to read. Not a lot. One old page, one word at a time, counting. Read the letter or look it up, count the cipher or take a photo of it, wait for Sunday or ride into the fog tonight: each road leads to one of twelve endings, and the book remembers which one he took, all the way down to a stone vault under an oak tree.

  • 12 endings — three good, one secret, two that hurt. No wrong answers. Consequences.
  • A real mystery — the Beale ciphers of 1885, three pages of numbers, one of them solved by counting the words of the Declaration of Independence. Documented at the back of the book, with the Declaration printed as the key so your kid can count it himself.
  • 2 secret phrases — one is a cipher of ten numbers, the other is the English of 1776. Understand both and you'll know which ending was waiting at the bottom of the hole.
  • Fully illustrated, 6×9, about 100 pages. Two afternoons for a fast reader; a week for one who likes to try every path.

For parents: there is no lecture in these pages. Nobody in this book tells Teo that reading matters, and nobody tells him to put the phone down. The book makes the treasure reachable only by reading, then lets him choose, every time, between the page and the screen. A two-page note at the end tells you what to ask when he finishes.

CROSSROADS is a collection of stand-alone adventures: same kid, same dog, same coin, a different country and a different challenge every time. Read them in any order. Start with any one.
