Why the Ball Bends: The Math and Science Hidden in Every Soccer Game: 1 - Tapa blanda

Sinopsis

Book 1: Learning the Field

Can you make a soccer ball curve? Sam can. But nobody on his team can say why.

Learning the Field is the first book in the Why the Ball Bends series, which teaches real math and science through the game of soccer. Join Maya, Theo, Sam, Priya, and their coach, and discover that the field they play on is full of numbers, shapes, and forces.

In eight short chapters, young readers:

• count the team, one player and one number at a time
• find the rectangles, circles, and straight lines painted on the grass
• see the difference between a straight path and a curved one
• learn what makes a ball move (pushes and pulls) and what makes it stop (friction)
• measure a field with perimeter and area
• line players up in even rows and discover multiplication
• fold the field in half to find symmetry

Every chapter follows the same rhythm: a moment from a real game, the idea hiding inside it, activities to try on a real field, and an answer key that explains the why, not just the answer. Measurements appear in both yards and meters.

For parents and teachers: written for readers in roughly grades 1 to 4. Younger children will enjoy it read aloud, counting and pointing along; older readers can take it on their own. The math is aligned to Common Core (Grades 1–4) and the science to the Next Generation Science Standards, with the exact standards for each chapter listed in the back. Includes a glossary and a complete answer key.

The team is made up, but the field, its measurements, and the rules of the game are real.
