Antonio Canova fu un protagonista assoluto dell’arte mondiale a cavallo tra la fine del Settecento e l’inizio dell’Ottocento. Definito dai contemporanei il «novello Fidia», incarna oggi l’essenza del Neoclassicismo; le sue opere si trovavano nelle maggiori collezioni del mondo, dagli Stati Uniti alla Russia. In occasione delle celebrazioni dei 200 anni dalla morte dell’artista, avvenuta a Venezia nel 1822, si è pensato a un itinerario per guidare il visitatore alla scoperta delle molteplici testimonianze artistiche lasciate dallo scultore, pittore e architetto nella sua regione: il Veneto, a cui rimase sempre legato. Possagno, Bassano del Grappa, Vicenza, Padova, Verona e Venezia sono ricche di opere conservate nei musei, nei palazzi e nelle chiese del territorio. Il Tempio di Possagno fu regalato dall’artista al suo paese natale mentre, per volere del fratello Giovanni Battista Sartori, dopo la morte di Antonio, gran parte delle opere dall’atelier romano vennero trasferite a Possagno e a Bassano del Grappa. Per ammirare la maggior parte delle sue sculture in marmo bisogna fare il giro del mondo, ma basterà recarsi a Possagno per ammirare in un unico luogo oltre trecento opere (sculture, disegni, incisioni e dipinti) dell’artista; la più grande esposizione permanente di Antonio Canova al mondo. Il volume offre un percorso di visita permanente alla scoperta del territorio veneto, infatti, oltre alle opere, si è invitati a scoprire i “luoghi canoviani” particolarmente significativi nella vita dell’artista.
