In 1879, about ten years before Johannes Brahms composed his late, melancholic piano pieces, he wrote the Two Rhapsodies op. 79 - two markedly passionate and relatively extensive works. In a letter to the convalescent Clara Schumann, Brahms spoke in a typically understated fashion about the two pieces 'with which you can really run riot and test whether the course of treatment has actually had any effect'. We prefer to agree with Brahms' friend Elisabeth von Herzogenberg: 'the fact that the g minor is my favourite does not make me insensitive towards the intensely prickly beauty of the one in b minor'. Both of these popular works have now been revised on the basis of the new Brahms Complete Edition.

Rund zehn Jahre bevor Johannes Brahms seine sp�ten, melancholischen Klavierst�cke komponierte, entstanden 1879 die beiden Rhapsodien op. 79 - zwei ausgesprochen leidenschaftliche und vergleichsweise umfangreiche Werke. Brahms spricht der rekonvaleszenten Clara Schumann gegen�ber mit gewohntem Understatement von zwei St�cken, ''an denen Du Dich recht austoben kannst und auch erproben, ob denn die Kur auch gen�tzt hat''. Wir m�chten eher der Brahms-Freundin Elisabeth von Herzogenberg zustimmen: ''Da� das g moll mein Liebling ist, macht mich aber nicht unempfindlich gegen die kraftvoll stachelige Sch�nheit des h Moll''. Die beiden beliebten Werke erscheinen nun revidiert auf der Basis der neuen Brahms-Gesamtausgabe.
