A reissue of the Singapore National Museum’s Batik: Creating an Identity, this book examines the role of batik in the social and cultural context of modern Indonesia and Singapore, and introduces the reader to the various styles of batik prevalent today. It also provides an accurate documentation of Indonesian batik craftsmen, and pays tribute to their technical skills and creativity. This reissue also features additional text and photos that will accord the reader a better understanding of the batik industry in Java.

Lee Chor Lin’s museum career began in 1985 as curator for the Southeast Asian collection at the National Museum of Singapore. She was later involved in the development of several museums and heritage institutions in Singapore, such as Asian Civilisations Museum in the capacity of Senior Curator, and the National Museum (2003–2013) as Director. Her dynamic leadership turned Singapore’s static museum landscape into a progressive and vibrant phenomenon. Lee is also a member of the advisory committee for the Humboldt Forum in Berlin, which is slated to open in 2019.
She has published several titles on Asian textiles, including Ancestral Ships: Fabric Impressions of Old Lampung Culture; Sacred Threads: Ceremonial Textiles of Southeast Asia; Power Dressing: Textiles for Rulers and Priests and chapters in the Berg Encyclopaedia of World Dress and Fashion for South Asia and Southeast Asia.
