In the Oriental style : a sourcebook of decoration and design

Hardcover. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fine. 224 pages : colour illustrations ; 26 cm. Since the beginning of trade between East and West, discerning Europeans and Americans have looked to the Orient as a source of beautiful and exotic objects, materials, textures and colours. A wide diversity of Oriental artefacts, motifs and colour schemes has enriched the vocabulary of Western design. Now, the relative accessibility of the countries of south-east Asia has opened up an even greater range of objects and designs which can be used and applied just as effectively in Western interiors as in the traditional dwellings of Japan, Thailand, Burma, and the other countries of eastern Asia. In the Oriental Style is a demonstration and celebration of Eastern elegance as a decorative style. It not only illustrates this elegance in traditional settings, but also shows how this style can be achieved in a Western or Westernized context. Here is a kaleidoscopic examination of 'style' in the Orient: the refined craftsmanship of Thai textiles and ceramics; traditional statuary from Burma; the minimalist perfection of a Japanese apartment. Much of this book is devoted to innovative Western interiors which draw their inspiration from Oriental design and objects. A wealth of individual pieces - antiques, ornamental screens and lacquerware, basketry and furniture - is illustrated and described, showing the enormous variety in decoration which even the simplest objects can bring to a Western house, apartment or garden. There is perhaps no single 'Oriental style', yet in this fascinating spectrum of south-east Asian cultures, family resemblances abound, and behind the apparently endless variety is, inevitably, the traditional influence of China and the uniquely influential modernist aesthetic of Japan. In its examination of traditional craft and design, and its superb illustrations of the decorative qualities of Oriental style and artefacts, this book forms a unique source of information and inspiration for all concerned with the art of elegant living and the appreciation of fine and beautiful objects.
