Social justice and human rights have a shared goal: human dignity, equally for all. The issues that make social justice difficult to achieve, such as poverty, exclusion and discrimination are in direct contradiction with human rights, which apply to all individuals indiscriminately. Social work´s emergence and historical evolution has been intertwined with evolving notions of human rights (HR) and social justice (SJ). At a time when economic globalization, armed conflict, and ecological devastation continue to undermine human rights and the possibilities for social justice, the need for linking a structural analysis to social work practice is greater than ever. The creation of a fair and just world requires the development and nurture of many qualities including justice, equity and human rights. Although progress is being made, the world is far from achieving universal social justice or the protection of human rights. For example, thanks to extreme poverty, tens of millions of children are denied the right to education. Many people are unfairly discriminated against on account of their race, gender or religious beliefs; the livelihoods of many indigenous people are being disrupted by exploitative industries; and political repression, arbitrary detention and torture are still rife in many countries. The present book is an effort to help scholars, activists, and practitioners promote a human rights culture and the overall well-being of populations across the globe.
