The United Nations Population Division has documented two striking and critical trends: population decline and population ageing. Japan and virtually all the countries of Europe are expected to decrease in population size over the next 50 years. In addition, these countries are undergoing a relatively rapid ageing process. This study addresses the question of whether replacement migration is a solution to these trends. Building on the estimates and projections of the United Nations Population Division, the present study considers six different scenarios with regard to the international migration streams needed to achieve specific population objectives or outcomes.
